Dry-disconnect (spill-free) couplings have shut-off valves in both halves that close automatically on disconnection - or prevent disconnection until the valves are closed - so the medium does not escape when the coupling is parted. Used on loading hoses and installations handling chemicals, fuels and other media where spillage is unacceptable. Not to be confused with breakaway couplings, which protect against hose rupture.
